The answer is not always. Creatinine is an important marker of kidney function, but it should never be interpreted on its own. Understanding what it represents can help you make informed decisions about your health.
What Is Creatinine?
Creatinine is a waste product produced naturally by your muscles during everyday activity. Healthy kidneys filter creatinine from the blood and remove it through urine.
Because the kidneys are responsible for clearing creatinine, measuring its level in the blood gives us an idea of how well the kidneys are functioning.
What Is a Normal Creatinine Level?
Someone with greater muscle mass may naturally have a slightly higher creatinine level than someone who is smaller or elderly.
For this reason, doctors often assess kidney function using estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) together with creatinine rather than relying on a single number.
Why Can Creatinine Be High?
An elevated creatinine level does not always indicate permanent kidney disease.
Possible causes include:
- Dehydration
- Kidney infection

- Urinary tract obstruction
