What is Heart Rate?

Heart rate refers to how many times your heart beats per minute. In most adults, a normal resting range is typically between 60 to 100 beats per minute. However, I often remind patients that “normal” is not just a number—fitness level, stress, fever, dehydration, and even anxiety can temporarily increase the heart rate.

When I evaluate a patient, I also look at whether the heart rhythm is regular or irregular, as this can sometimes be more important than the speed itself.

What is Oxygen Level (SpO2)?

Oxygen saturation (SpO2) measures how much oxygen your blood is carrying. In most healthy individuals, it ranges from 95% to 100%.

In clinic settings, I often see patients worried when readings show 93–94%. In some cases, this may be due to poor finger placement, cold hands, nail polish, or device limitations rather than true oxygen deficiency.

However, persistently low readings, especially below 92%, should always be assessed medically.

For example, a slightly elevated heart rate in someone with fever may be completely expected. On the other hand, a normal reading in someone with chest pain and breathlessness still requires urgent assessment.

I usually advise patients to seek medical attention if they experience:

  • Unexplained fatigue
